Wat Phra Si Sanphet and Wihara Pra Mangkhon Bophit - August 2006 : A visit here with Benji and friends in August 2006. Wat Phra Si Sanphet was a residential palace and monastery but was ransacked in 1767 by the Burmese. The remaining ruins are extraorinarily impressive. Little was left of the grand palace except for a few walls. The giant Buddha (Pra Mangkhon Bophit) is made of brick and covered with bronze and gilt, and dates from the 16th century. Originally located outdoors it was badly damaged in the sacking of Ayutthaya by the Burmese in 1767. It has since been restored. It is gigantic and would have looked phenomenal when housed outdoors. The pictures in the beginning are from the market at the entrance to the Wat.

Wat Chaiwatthanaram (วัดไชยวัฒนาราม) : A visit with Benji, Ta Ta and Ou to Wat Chaiwatthanaram in August 2006. This monastery was built by the royal command of King Prasat Thong as a memorial to his country and to celebrate his coronation in 1630. It was built in the Khmer architectural style, but, unlike the temples in Ankor, Cambodia, was built in brick not stone. Over the centuries the weight of the bricks have caused the structures to sag and in some cases to collapse. As well damage was caused to the Monastery when Ayutthaya was sacked by the Burmese in 1767. This monastery is astonishingly beautiful and my photos barely do it justice. The highlight of my trip to Ayutthaya.
