Gyeongbokgung Palace 경복훙 - Seoul : A visit to the Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul in August 2006. It was the primary palace of the Joseon Dynasty built by its founder, King Taejo in 1395. Destroyed by the Japanese in 1592, it was left in ruins for over 270 years. It was restored in 1868. However, when Korea was annexed by Japan in 1910, most of the 200 buildings were torn down leaving only a dozen or so. Since 1990 the palace has been extensively restored.

Changdeokgung Palace 창덕궁 - Seoul : A visit to Changdeokgung Palace in August 2006. Constructed in 1405, destroyed by fire during the Japanese invasion of 1592, it was reconstructed in 1610. The extensive garden (Biwon) is enchanting. Truly stunning.

Hiking in Seoul - Bukhansan National Park 한국어 , August 2006, pt. 1 : A hike in Bukhansan national park, on the outskirts of Seoul. The park contains forested areas, temples and granite peaks, Baekundae (836m), Insubong (810m) and Mangnyeongdae (799m). An incredibly tough climb up the mountains to the summit of Insubong and then Baekundae. The humidity was opressive and I sweated a river, but the scenery was fantastic as we climbed in and out of the mist.Includes photos of Seoul taken from the mountain top. Many thanks Bo Kyoung for befriending me and sharing lunch with me.

Seoul Tower 엔 서울타워 : A trip up the Namsam cable car to the N Seoul tower and then up the tower. Incredible views from the observation platform. N Seoul Tower is located on the top of Mount Namsan. It was built for broadcasting. Construction comnmenced in 1969, in 1975 the tower was completed, and was opened to the public in 1980. It is 237 metres high (777 feet). From the bottom of Mt Namsan on which it is situated to the top of tower is 480 metres(1,574 feet). Then we came down on the cable car as well. Includes photos taken in and from the cable car.
